Overview

Barry Adamson — former member of Magazine, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and a celebrated solo artist — was preparing to self-release new music in 2021. Building on a previous collaboration creating Memento Mori assets, we were approached to develop lyric videos and visualisers for his upcoming singles.

The project came through Shaun Connon, a freelance project manager with deep roots at Mute Records, who saw an opportunity to bring fresh visual energy to Barry's new material while working within the realities of an independent release.

Challenge

The brief presented a unique creative opportunity with practical constraints:

  • Create compelling visual content for an artist with a rich legacy and discerning audience.
  • Work within modest budgets typical of self-released music.
  • Deliver lyric videos that could stand alongside full music videos in quality and engagement.

The first single, "Broken Moments," had a distinct 60s summer feel — warm, melodic, with "lots of La La's." The creative direction needed to honour this retro sensibility while feeling fresh and contemporary.

Approach

We approached the visualisers as an extension of Barry's artistic vision rather than a promotional afterthought. The goal was to create motion pieces that could live independently as visual art while amplifying the music's emotional resonance.

Visual Direction

For "Broken Moments," we developed a psychedelic flower power aesthetic — vibrant colours, fluid motion, and nostalgic textures that evoked the song's 60s influences without pastiche. The typography was integrated as a design element, not an overlay.

Budget-Conscious Creativity

Self-released projects require resourceful solutions. We focused on techniques that maximised visual impact — procedural animation, bold colour palettes, and rhythmic editing that synced tightly with the music's structure.

Creative Solution

The visualisers balanced nostalgia with modern motion design — kaleidoscopic patterns, warm analogue textures, and typography that danced with the rhythm. Each piece was crafted to reward repeat viewing, revealing new details with each watch.

The work demonstrated that lyric videos don't have to be functional afterthoughts. With the right creative treatment, they become genuine visual companions to the music — enhancing the listening experience rather than merely illustrating it.

Results & Impact

  • Delivered engaging visualisers that elevated Barry Adamson's self-released singles.
  • Built on an existing relationship, reinforcing trust and creative partnership.
  • Opened doors to potential future projects with BMG and Mute Records reissue campaigns.

The collaboration reinforced our reputation for delivering high-quality creative work within real-world budget constraints — proving that independent releases can have visuals as compelling as major label productions.
